A holiday themed interview with Sunshine’s CEO, Nancy Sutherland
We hope as you read Nancy’s answers below you will think about your own answers to some of these fun holiday questions.

Q: What is your favourite holiday treat?
Growing up we had a Scottish family tradition of making a ‘hard sauce’ to go on warm plum pudding. It is a sauce made of butter, icing sugar and vanilla. Still a holiday favourite of mine. In fact, I only eat the plum pudding as a means to indulge in the hard sauce.

Q: If Santa let you borrow one of his reindeer, which one would you pick and why?
That would have to be Rudolph.  I have watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer show at least 100 times—as a child myself and then MANY times with my sons.  Rudolph was bullied and shunned—I think my advocacy tendencies began to form with Rudolph!  I would pick Rudolph and make sure he knew how incredible he is.

Q: As a child, what was one of your biggest holiday dreams?
Every Christmas my grandparents would take the train from Montreal to London to spend two weeks with us.  Every year I would pray and dream that they would move to London to live next door to us.

Q: What is your favourite thing to do when you’re not working as the CEO?
Fitness and a healthier lifestyle have become more of a focus this past year so I love to have time to exercise and to shop and prepare healthy but tasty meals!

Q: What first attracted you to join The Sunshine Foundation of Canada, first as a board member, then as CEO?
The power of this mission is what first drew my attention—the opportunity to help children write a brighter future story is compelling and I wanted to play even a small part in that.

Q: What are you proud to have accomplished in the past 9 years at Sunshine?
Sunshine continues to partner with our community to grow as the need for our programs grows. I am proud that each year we now serve children from coast to coast to coast and raise our funds from communities and partners all along the way.

Q: What New Year’s resolution do you have to inspire the Sunshine team to excel in 2018?
As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary this year I am resolved to overcome barriers in our quest for new business and community partners and I hope this encourages all our stakeholders to overcome whatever challenges they are facing to grow as well.

Q: What are you looking forward to seeing at Sunshine in 2018?
We have another wonderful year ahead for Sunshine as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary! As always, our young dreamers from all provinces have been requesting some unique experiences—such as meeting Aerosmith or fighting crime with The Avengers. We have a Sunshine DreamLift in preparation for April with 80 kids being whisked off for a whirlwind day of yes! And, our Signature Event—Float for Dreams—this June 23rd is in its 3rd year raising funds.

Q: What is one inclusive winter break activity you can recommend to most families?
Reading out loud with each other.  Doesn’t matter what the weather is and you can transport yourself to anywhere you want to go by reading a story together.
