Determination Sends Emma on Her Harry Potter Dream Come True

Wednesday, December 21, 2016

Most children are intrigued by magic and the extraordinary wonders found in worlds of fantasy. For a child living with a severe physical disability or life-threatening illness, a world that includes magic is a world where children can do fantastic things and where anything is possible. It’s for this reason that Harry Potter is such a popular theme for Sunshine’s Dream Program.  Three years after 18-year-old Alexane from Montreal, Quebec received her Sunshine Dream to visit the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour in London, England she continues to be inspired by her experience. “I sleep with more wonderful dreams than before,” she says. “If you believe in your dreams, they can come true with the wave of a wand!”

A similar sentiment was shared from 16-year-old Mackenzie from Windsor, ON whose Sunshine Dream to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando Florida came true earlier this year. “When I watch the Harry Potter movies I realize that, as Albus Dumbledore said, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”

Just like the letters flown in by the Owl Post in Harry Potter, Sunshine received a special letter this summer from 12-year-old Emma from Fredericton, New Brunswick asking for us to help make her dream of visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter come true.

Read Emma’s Letter

Emma’s letter shared what a big fan she was of Harry Potter, having read “four and a half of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling”, detailing all of the exciting things she hoped to do on her magical trip. Read Emma’s Letter

At 12-years-old, Emma has already overcome challenges in her life that most will never have to deal with – ongoing physical therapy and adjusting to leg braces and foot orthotics to support her cerebral palsy are just the most recent.  Determined to make her Harry Potter dream come true, Emma started saving up her money, raising $70.00 which she shows in a drawing of her “Harry Potter Fund” included in her letter. Having shown so much hard work, dedication and passion, Emma’s parents applied for a customized Sunshine Dream that would give Emma a well-deserved reward and some much-needed magic.

It was not too long ago that our Sunshine Team called Emma to officially announce that her dream will come true this holiday season. With the happiest tears in her eyes, she felt like Harry when he received his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts. Emma’s bags are packed and with her Dumbledore wand in hand she’s ready for a journey to a world where magic is real and dreams can come true.

You can help make dreams come true for more children like Emma who need a bit of magic in their lives.
